Country Codes According to ISO Standards

During transportation, it is a common practice to use ISO country codes, which indicate the country of delivery. Instead of the country name (which depends on the language), it is simpler to use a combination of letters or numbers that are understood worldwide. 

ISO 3166 consists of three parts: codes for the administrative-territorial units of countries, regional codes and previously used codes (codes that were once used to describe countries, but are no longer in use).

Country codes can be represented as two-character codes (Alpha-2), recommended as a universal standard, or three-character codes (Alpha-3), which can be used in cases where the use of the Latin alphabet is not suitable. 

The names and codes of units are usually derived from the relevant official national sources of information. These codes are established by the International Organization for Standardization.

Previously, four-character alphabetic codes (Alpha-4) were also used. Below is a table showing the correspondence between the country and territory codes from ISO 3166-1 and the administrative-territorial unit codes from ISO 3166-2.
