A simplified regime for freight transportation between Ukraine and Moldova will be introduced

Cross-border freight transportation between Ukraine and Moldova will be simplified. The corresponding decision was made at a meeting of the European Parliament’s Transport and Tourism Committee, as reported on the European Parliament’s website. The final decision will be made in November during the next session.

Parliamentarians approved two separate agreements with two countries:

  • Simplified transportation of goods between the EU, Ukraine, and Moldova applies to items such as grain reserves, fuel, and food products.
  • Recognition of Ukrainian driver’s licenses.

The documents will facilitate road freight transportation by allowing carriers from Ukraine, Moldova, and the EU to transit through each other’s territories and operate without requiring special permits.

The reason for this decision is the damage to Ukraine’s transport infrastructure caused by the war with Russia.

“Ukraine needs to find alternative road routes for exporting its grain reserves, fuel, food, and other relevant goods. Moldova has the same need — it requires alternative transit routes through the EU and must also assist Ukraine in transporting its goods through Moldova,” the press release states.

Additionally, the agreement between Ukraine and the EU will allow Ukrainian drivers to continue using their existing Ukrainian driver’s licenses and professional competency certificates for driving in the EU without the need for an international driver’s license.

According to Romanian MEP Marian-Jean Marinescu from the European People’s Party, these agreements will increase the level of exports and imports by road transport without causing congestion at border crossings.

“This not only reduces the risk of a global food crisis, but it is also a step toward further expansion of transport relations between the EU and these countries,” said the politician.
