The term “lowboy trailer” is commonly used in Ukraine in the field of oversized cargo transportation and the construction industry.
In everyday language, lowboy trailers refer to heavy-duty towed equipment, including semi-trailers and heavy-duty transporters.
Lowboy trailer services are used in the following cases:
- Transportation of oversized cargo and various equipment (bulldozers, excavators of various models, lifting capacities, and dimensions, asphalt pavers, combines, drilling rigs, etc.).
- Transportation of various non-bulk cargo (containers, specialized equipment, pipes, etc.).
Main Classifications of Heavy-Duty Trailers (Lowboy Trailers) and Specialized Transport:
Load Capacity (Weight of Transported Cargo):
- Light: Up to 20-25 tons
- Medium: 20-45 tons
- Heavy: 45-110 tons
- Ultra-heavy modules/platforms: Over 110 tons, used for transporting indivisible cargo such as ships, space rockets, and structures.
Loading Platform Height (Loading Height):
- High-bed: Over 1000 mm
- Low-bed: ~850-950 mm
- Extra-low platform: ~400-700 mm
Suspension Type
- Leaf spring or spring-balance (used in both high-bed and low-bed heavy trailers).
- Pneumatic (used in low-bed heavy trailers and extra-low platform trailers).
- Hydraulic (rarely used, primarily in ultra-heavy modular trailers).
- Balancer (rigid, non-spring) (rarely used in high-bed heavy trailers).
Number of Axles
- 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or more.
- High-bed semi-trailers usually have 2 or 3 axles, rarely 4.
- Low-bed trailers have between 2 to 7 axles, sometimes up to 8.
A specific type of lowboy trailer is known as the “detachable gooseneck” trailer. It differs from other lowboy trailers in that loading occurs by disconnecting the structural components.
List of Services for Lowboy Trailer Transportation:
- Expedition services for road construction equipment
- Specialized equipment transportation using lowboy trailers
- Transportation of ice resurfacers by lowboy trailers
- Excavator transportation by lowboy trailers
- Bulldozer transportation by lowboy trailers
- Tractor transportation by lowboy trailers
- Combine harvester transportation by lowboy trailers
In most cases, a standard cargo truck with a capacity of 5 tons is sufficient to transport a tractor. Since tractor models vary, such as the MTZ tractor series, their dimensions allow them to fit into a standard 5-ton truck. However, if two MTZ tractors need to be transported, a 20-ton truck or an 86-cubic-meter semi-trailer is required. In this case, specialized transport is unnecessary.
